Today’s Kindergarten Is Yesterday’s First Grade

The problem we encounter with today's educational system is that preschool has really replaced what kindergarten used to be and now Kindergarten is what 1st grade used to be, educationally. So, even though we can say that children should be taught at home so they can get play dates and be kids etc, the realities of the situation are, that the children who haven't gone to preschool or haven't had exposure to letters, numbers, colors, shapes etc before Kindergarten are really behind before they even get started.

I believe that preschool is fine in small amounts, but quite frankly, the first 5 years should be focused on the parent/child relationship. There is plenty of time once the child starts school for parents to get time for themselves. After all, why have children at all if you are just going to dump them off at preschool or day care?

tate23,
I don't think the issue is parents having time to themselve. The first five years of a child's life are crucial with brain development and unless the parents are teaching children the skills to prepare them for school, they are going to be behind. Many will never catch up. I agree with you why have children if all you do is dump them off at day care, but preschool is different matter. If you wait until your child is five years old it might be too late.
